Give Teachers More Freedom

I just read this article and thought it was worth sharing.  It is about an idea from the book "Trusting Teachers with School Success. " The idea is that instead of controlling teachers, administrators and school board leaders should allow teachers more autonomy and let them make more decisions about the education they are providing.  It definitely sounds like an idea that would work to me.  Empower teachers by giving them more freedom and decision- making capabilities since they are the ones in the classroom everyday.  Let's make learning fun again for the students and teachers too!

  1. This is very interesting and nice to see written in an article. I feel that as teachers we are given so much education ourselves. Most teachers that I know are full of many innovative and creative ways of reaching our students. Unfortunately though through the years we somehow lose this drive and desire. I think that if we were encouraged, as this article seems to suggest, both teachers and students would benefit.

  2. Thanks for the response. I agree, so many teachers I talk to have great ideas but feel like they do not have the time or freedom to implement them in their classrooms because of all the demands and expectations. If teachers had more of a say in what and how they teach, i think a little bit of that most drive and desire that you mentioned would come back.

  3. I definitely agree that teachers need more freedom. Looking back on my own education, the teachers who have made the greatest impression on me are ones who were creative in their teaching methods. With growing demands and changing curriculums, teachers seem to have less of an opportunity to be innovative. I believe this is true in many other fields as well. The more regulations and demands are imposed upon workers, the less they are able to try new things, be creative, and demonstrate shine freedom in their line of work.
Another interesting point brought up in the article was freedom with student evaluations. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think it's a realistic goal?

  4. I agree that teachers need more freedom. Teachers are very creative and coming up with new ways to motivate kids is something they have a passion for. This ability to be creative is being taken away from them and is leaving them unhappy in their profession. If there was less testing maybe kids would enjoy school more. If there was less testing maybe teachers could make learning fun for the kids.

  5. I think that the corporate model that is currently being imposed upon teachers and schools, especially in New York, is just not working. Leaders of schools should have had prior teaching experience. Those coming in to take over school systems should be required to first teach and be in the classrooms with students.
